Respiratory Illness, Dog Bites Among Top Concerns For Travelers to China Study Provides Insight to Help Olympics Travelers Prepare for Trip
Beijing-bound Olympic travelers should worry less about exotic diseases, and instead focus on preventing more mundane health problems like respiratory illness and dog bites. A new study by experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the GeoSentinel Surveillance
Network found that, during the past 10 years, dog bites were actually one of the more common health problems travelers face when visiting China. Other common ailments were respiratory infections, skin problems, injuries, and diarrhea.
With an estimated 600,000 foreign visitors and athletes, and as many as 2 million Chinese attendees, expected at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in August, the study provides key information that can help people plan their visits and protect their health.
The paper, published online June 26, 2008, in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, used 1998-2007 data gathered by the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network and analyzed by GeoSentinel and CDC experts to assess illnesses among the 2,500 travelers to China that were in the database. The GeoSentinel Network was founded by the CDC and the International Society of Travel Medicine and is made up of 41 travel medicine clinics worldwide that provide traveler care and track travel-related health data.
"Many international travelers worry about exotic diseases. They probably don't think about injuries or dog bites, but the study found that travelers to China sought treatment for these ailments more often," said Dr. Nina Marano, chief of the CDC's Travelers' Health and Animal Importation Branch. "Travelers need to be cautious about dog bites, as China has the second highest rate of human rabies cases in the world."
Respiratory illnesses, such as asthma and bronchitis, were the most common diagnoses for travelers seeking medical care while in China, and the primary cause of hospitalization for travelers in China. Acute diarrhea and dog bites were the most frequent ailments for travelers receiving post-travel medical care. Travelers also complained of injuries, like sprains and strains. Rates of tropical and parasitic disease were low: there were no reported cases of malaria or dengue fever among travelers in this study
"We hope travelers take this information and use it to prepare themselves for a healthy trip," said Dr. Marano. "Using common sense while in Beijing can also help keep you healthy. Wash your hands, watch your step, and don't pet stray dogs."
Travel health experts at CDC say that travelers can help reduce their risk of becoming ill or injured by taking the following precautions:
* Visit a travel medicine clinic four to six weeks prior to leaving to get travel advice.
* Ensure all vaccinations are up-to-date.
* Wash hands or use hand sanitizers frequently to help prevent the spread of respiratory and diarrheal illness.
* Avoid all animals while in China. If bitten, wash all bite wounds promptly and seek reliable medical care immediately.
* Wear comfortable walking shoes and pay special attention when crossing the street and boarding public transportation to minimize injury risk.
* Eat only fully cooked food that is served hot or fruits and vegetables you can wash and peel yourself to decrease the risk of diarrhea.
For more CDC recommendations for Olympic travelers, athletes and health-care providers, please visit http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/contentOlympics2008.aspx. For general
recommendations for travel to China, see http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationChina.aspx.

Georgia's Own "Little Grand Canyon"
Take a short trip down south of Columbus and see Georgia's own canyon. Fondly known as the "Little Grand Canyon," the Providence Canyon State Park is a beautiful spot to see some of nature's best shows of color. Visitors can stand on the rim and view the canyon or hike down to the canyon floor.
The canyon was formed by poor farming practices in the 1800's. The deepest canyon is around 150 feet.
If you go, be careful what you say. Voices carry from the bottom of the canyon all the way to the top.
Upcoming events include Geology Day and Junior Rangers.

Caribbean Island Of Flowers
(NAPSI)-Known as the Caribbean Island with French Flair and also called the Isle of Flowers, this island remains one of the most alluring and enchanting destinations in the world, as unforgettable as a summer romance or a first kiss.
The waters of the Atlantic Ocean lap its shores on the east and the Caribbean Sea is to the west. To get there, American Airlines and Air France could be good places to start researching travel information.
Got it yet? Here’s another clue: This lovely island is an overseas region of France, and in keeping with its traditions, this vibrant island stirs the passions with awe-inspiring natural beauty, a rich cultural history, distinctive culinary delights, warm smiles and so much more.
One More Clue
Napoleon’s bride, Empress Josephine, was born and raised here.
If you guessed Martinique, you’re right. And it’s not called the Isle of Flowers for nothing. In the morning, there’s the fragrance of flowers and herbs glistening with dew. As the day wears on, a delicate mix of aromas wafts through the air, hinting at the fresh ingredients of Creole dishes being prepared.
Superb Gardens
The Carib Indians named the island Madinina, or “Island of Flowers.” A visit to the superb gardens of Martinique will show visitors how appropriate this name really is. Two-thirds of the island has the French classification “Regional Nature Park,” which means that most of the territory is natural and protected. The northern part of Martinique gives us the most accurate idea of how Madi-nina was back when the Caribs lived on the island. This region is a gold mine of old trees, untouched rivers and waterfalls, unique tropical flowers, and sugarcane, pineapple and banana plantations.
Gauguin’s Favorite Village
Located in Carbet-Paul Gauguin’s favorite village on the Caribbean coast-Habitation de l’Anse Latouche, formerly a sugar factory, was built in 1643 and is one of the oldest plantation estates of Martinique.
Today, Jean-Philippe Thoze, legendary founder of the Balata Botanical Garden, has transformed the grounds of Habitation Latouche into a spectacular yet peaceful garden where history and nature are joined in a love story.
Martinique’s Hotels
Martinique’s hotels range in size from large (300 rooms) to very small (fewer than 10 rooms), and their ambience and atmosphere vary from seaside Caribbean resorts offering every tourist amenity from expensive to quite modest. All the larger hotels have sports facilities, a choice of restaurants and evening entertainment; all beachfront hotels have full water-sport programs. Some hotels have kitchenette studios. The island boasts approximately 4,656 rooms in more than 100 resorts, bed-and-breakfast inns and distinctive hotels de charme.
Get Going
One of the best ways to experience all the natural wonders that Martinique has to offer is by escorted 4x4’s, or what Americans call suburbans. These are air-conditioned, and local guides accompany all excursions, ensuring an insider’s introduction to all the best that Martinique has to offer.
For a bouncier trip around the island, rent a “quad,” which is a cross between a motorcycle and a go-cart and tough and nimble enough to traverse Martinique’s thick rain forests, picturesque meadows, historic ruins, back trails and even secluded beaches inaccessible by conventional roads.
Planning A Trip
To learn more, contact the Martinique Promotion Bureau/ CMT USA located at 825 Third Avenue, 29th floor, New York, NY 10022. You can also call 212-838-7800, ext. 981 or visit www.martinique.org.
An island of awe-inspiring beauty, this lovely island is an overseas region of France.

The Kratt Brothers, Cast of Amazing Animals Headline Dollywood’s 2008 KidsFest
BUSINESS WIRE--Get ready as Dollywood goes wild this summer during KidsFest (June 13-Aug. 3) as The Kratt Brothers star in the never-before-seen live stage show Creature Adventures starring the Kratt Brothers, created especially for the theme park.
“The Smoky Mountains are full of all God’s creatures, but The Kratt Brothers are going to entertain families with some of their special critter friends that I can’t wait to see at Dollywood, like a penguin!” Dolly Parton said. “They tell me there’ll be a snake on stage that’s as long as I am tall, even with my high heels on!”
Stars of the popular PBS Zoboomafoo children’s television series, Chris and Martin Kratt are the original “creature adventurers.” Their adventures bring a menagerie of amazing animals to the stage at DP’s Celebrity Theatre for this exciting new 40-minute show. Animal lovers of all ages will get to see a zebra, red kangaroo, coati, porcupine, beaver, rainbow boa, spurred tortoise and more. Learn more about these fascinating creatures as The Kratt Brothers share interesting animal tales from their worldwide escapades that have found them face to face with animals of all walks of life. Creature Adventures is included with park admission; multiple performances are scheduled daily throughout the seven-week festival.
Dollywood is crawling with animal encounters all summer long. Kamp KidsFest featuring Kreatures, Kritters and Krafts, located in the Valley Exhibition Hall, is open daily and lets guests of all ages get up-close with a variety of small animals, remarkable reptiles and captivating bugs. A professional animal caregiver from the Knoxville Zoo is on hand to share fascinating facts about each creature while showcasing the animal to park guests.
For a rare, up-close view of birds of prey, guests also can visit the new raptor facility located next to the park’s Wings of America Theatre, featuring 10 viewing stalls filled with different birds, including those that perform in the show. Representatives from the Dollywood-headquartered not-for-profit American Eagle Foundation are on hand to answer questions and provide information about the fascinating birds which include the bald eagle, black vulture, African pied crow, great horned owl, Peregrine falcon and more.
Summer’s most remarkable sand sculptures aren’t just at the beach this summer. Sandscapes, 12-time winner of the World Sand Sculpture Championship, will create large-scale, three-dimensional sand sculptures throughout KidsFest. Located in the Village area near the Train Depot, Sandscapes’ original KidsFest designs will feature trains and animals. The sand artists will use 75 tons of sand to create their designs—some of which stand as tall as eight feet—in a 24-foot by 24-foot sandbox. Guests can watch the Sandscapes artists’ ongoing work as they build new pieces.
Some familiar faces make a heralded return to KidsFest this summer. VeggieTales LIVE! finds Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber matching wits with The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. At Dolly’s Imagination Playhouse, the Penguin Players are back with three sing-along stage shows featuring music written by Dolly.

“Little House” Receives Big Makeover Courtesy of Hampton Hotels
Renowned author Laura Ingalls Wilder, best known for her “Little House” series of novels, penned five of her narratives about her childhood home in De Smet, S.D. Wilder’s home, which has been under the care and preservation of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society (http://discoverlaura.org/ ) since her death in 1957, will receive a much-needed makeover with the help of Hampton® Hotels’ Save-A-Landmark® program.
The restoration effort is the second Save-A-Landmark project of 2008 and the 37th in the program’s nine-year history. Dozens of volunteers from local Hampton Hotels will carefully clean, prime, paint and repair historical buildings from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s life, including the following:
· Ingalls’ home, built by Laura’s Pa in 1887 was the final home that the Ingalls family lived in on the property
· Surveyors’ house, was the original home that the Ingalls family lived in upon arriving in De Smet in 1879. Laura writes about this landmark in her book, “By the Shores of Silver Lake” The home was a landmark to all those who traveled West in 1880
· First School of De Smet, which is the original building where Laura and her sister Carrie attended school from 1880 to 1885. In April 2007, the school became the newest addition to the Society’s headquarters, after serving as a private residence for many years
· Laura Ingalls Wilder Gift Shop, which serves as an important piece of the Society’s headquarters.
In addition, volunteers will revamp the landscape with grasses and flowers native to the South Dakota prairie, as well as repave the sidewalk and steps leading up to the Surveyors’ house, the First School of De Smet and the Gift Shop, making all buildings handicap accessible. Hampton Hotels will contribute more than 85 volunteer hours towards ensuring the ongoing care of the national landmarks.
The Hampton Hotels Save-A-Landmark 2008 campaign – aptly named “Landmark Legends,” is devoted to restoring sites that pay homage to prominent Americans. This year’s program kicked-off in Memphis, honoring the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s untimely passing, with the refurbishment of the National Civil Rights Museum. Several other iconic locations such as Amelia Earhart’s Birthplace and Museum, the Barnum Museum, and the Poe Museum will be refurbished in 2008 through Save-A-Landmark as well. The list of legendary figures was generated from a nationwide survey, conducted by Hampton Hotels, to celebrate the accomplishments of those Americans who have inspired change, overcome adversity and made a difference.
“Laura Ingalls Wilder was an innovator in American literature. We’re proud to be able to help repair the grounds in which she lived, wrote and taught,” said Judy Christa-Cathey, vice president of brand marketing for Hampton Hotels.
Those looking to discover other locations devoted to historic individuals – or to possibly nominate their own “Landmark Legend” – can visit the Save-A-Landmark site at www.hamptonlandmarks.com and click on “submit a landmark” to enter a nomination for a legendary landmark. Below is just a sample of “heroic” landmarks already included in the program’s online database.
· Jesse Owens Memorial Park, Danville, Ala.: This park honors Olympic great Jesse Owens, an Oakville native who won four gold medals in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, the first American and the second athlete in history to win four gold medals.
· Jackie Robinson Birthplace, Cairo, Ga.: Born here on January 31, 1919 to sharecroppers and enslaved grandparents on what was once a plantation, Jackie Robinson – the first African-American major league baseball player – was just two years old when his mother packed up Jackie and his four siblings, hopped on a train and headed to California.
· Hellen Keller Birthplace, Tuscumbia, Ala.: This small birthplace cottage was the site of the remarkable story of Helen Keller, the woman who was struck blind and deaf after becoming ill around the age of two. The home, called Ivy Green, eventually became the living quarters for Helen and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, whose huge teaching strides with Helen began by simply spelling out the word "water" in Helen’s hand as she pumped water over it.
· Celia Cruz and Freedom Tower, Miami, Fla.: The Cuban songstress Celia Cruz, “the Queen of Salsa,” performed at Freedom Tower during a 2001 fundraiser to turn the site into a museum, and was later brought to the tower after her death so tens of thousands of mourners could pay their last respects to the legendary singer. Known as the Ellis Island of the Cuban community, Freedom Tower is where immigration officials processed more than 500,000 Cubans who fled the country in the 1960s.
Hampton’s Save-A-Landmark program is continuing its ninth year preserving historical, fun and cultural landmarks, from the Carousel Gardens in New Orleans, La. to the historical National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth, Mass. During this time, the program has helped research landmarks in need, promoted landmark sites and their importance, facilitated thousands of volunteer hours, donated several tons of supplies and worked with matching grants — all at an investment of more than $2.5 million. Uniting its hotels together in the communities they serve, Hampton employee-volunteers work hand-in-hand on the landmarks while Hampton provides the financial support to refurbish selected sites.
Landmark nominations have been a key element of the Save-A-Landmark program’s success since its inception in 2000, with thousands of nominations provided by the public. Submissions can be made online at www.hamptonlandmarks.com or by mailing recommendations c/o Save-A-Landmark to 8730 Sunset Blvd, 5th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90069.

Delta Air Lines Begins Nonstop Service from New York-JFK to Antigua and Barbuda
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today launches nonstop service today from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Antigua and Barbuda as part of its continued expansion in the Caribbean.
This flight complements Delta’s existing nonstop service to Antigua and Barbuda from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
A prime spot for snorkeling and scuba diving among spectacular coral reef, Antigua (pronounced An-tee’ga) and Barbuda are two islands that comprise one country located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Barbuda also offers bird watching enthusiasts a significant bird sanctuary in the region.
“Delta continues to open new Caribbean routes out of JFK to bring New Yorkers closer to beautiful beaches, sun, and relaxation,” said Christophe Didier, Delta’s vice president of Sales and Government Affairs in Latin America and the Caribbean for Delta Air Lines. “We have started more than 10 new routes in the Caribbean basin in the last couple of years, many of them departing from JFK as part of our continued international expansion.”
Delta’s new flight will operate Thursdays and Sundays, beginning June 12.

Delta Requests DOT Authority to Offer Service Between New York-JFK and Buenos Aires
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today announced it filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for permission to start new nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Pending DOT approval, Delta currently plans to offer five flights weekly from December to April and four flights per week during the rest of the year, with the possibility of increasing frequencies depending on demand. If approved, the new flight will begin in December of this year and will complement Delta’s current daily nonstop service between Buenos Aires and Atlanta.
“Developing JFK as a major Delta hub is paramount for the success of our international expansion strategy, and reaching the Americas from New York is an important part of this equation,” said Christophe Didier, Delta’s vice president of Sales and Government Affairs for Latin America and the Caribbean. “JFK is key to our continuous growth in Latin America, especially in a market such as Buenos Aires, a destination that currently lacks sufficient nonstop service to New York City at a time when demand for travel on this route is high.”
Delta offers year-round and seasonal service to Latin America and the Caribbean from eight U.S. airports, mostly from Atlanta and Los Angeles. From JFK, the airline flies to 18 destinations, including San Juan, Puerto Rico; Mexico City, Mexico*; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Panama City, Panama; San Jose and Liberia, Costa Rica; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Georgetown, Guyana; in addition to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and several islands in the Antilles. Later this year, Delta also will start nonstop service between JFK and Bogotá, Colombia.

Antarctica Ices Over Fernbank’s IMAX® Theatre
Experience the icy mysteries and exquisite beauties of the highest, driest and coldest continent on Earth in the giant screen film Antarctica opening June 7, 2008 at Fernbank Museum of Natural History.
Audiences will witness penguins, seals and other exotic life forms that call this southernmost expanse home while learning about its history and scientific research stations. The only place on Earth with no permanent human inhabitants, Antarctica is home to an incredible diversity of life that thrives in one of the harshest environments, giving an air of wonderment to this delicate ecosystem. This five-story film experience illustrates the magnificence of the crisp, blue skies and bright, white ice along with the deep crevasses and towering mountains of the Antarctic.
Observe scientific endeavors in this remote region aiming to spread the message of protecting the fragile balance of the Earth’s ecology. The Antarctic ice sheets hold 70 percent of the world’s water, demonstrating the importance of slowing global warming, preserving the ozone layer and, ultimately, helping our planet.
“Antarctica is a film that uses the IMAX® format so well, taking audiences to one of the Earth’s natural wonders in a way that most people will never experience on their own,” said Heather Heimmer, Fernbank’s Director of Environmental Education. “It’s a great companion to our special exhibition, Ends of the Earth—giving people a hands-on exploration of our polar regions in the exhibition, and a dramatically beautiful view beneath the icy waters and across the frozen expanses of Antarctica in the film.”
Fernbank has combined the splendor of Antarctica with the special exhibition, Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins, to maximize an exciting adventure to the freezing, yet lively, environments of the world. Penguins of the Antarctic: A Photographic Expedition will also be featured at Fernbank from June 8-August 31, allowing Museum visitors to get an up-close look at the Adelie, Gentoo, Macaroni, King and Emperor Penguins that are found in Antarctica.
Antarctica shows daily at Fernbank Museum of Natural History from June 7, 2008 through January 2, 2009. Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins is on view from June 7, 2008 through January 2, 2009.
IMAX® tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, $11 for children ages 3 to 12, $8 for Museum members, and free for children ages 2 and under. Martinis & IMAX® tickets, available on Friday nights, are $15. Value Pass tickets, which combine Antarctica, Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins and Penguins of the Antarctic: A Photographic Expedition with full museum access, are $23 for adults, $21 for students and seniors, $19 for children ages 3 to 12, $8 for Museum members, and free for children 2 and under.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road in Atlanta. More information is available to visitors at fernbankmuseum.org. Tickets can be purchased in advance at 404.929.6400.

System traffic in May 2008 increased 4.2 percent over May 2007 with a capacity increase of 1.5 percent. As a result of Delta’s combination of unique markets and improved product offerings international traffic remained strong in May, increasing 20.9 percent year over year on a 17.4 percent increase in capacity. Delta’s international load factor was 80.8 percent, an increase of 2.3 points compared to May 2007. In addition, a record number of passengers flew internationally on Delta during May. The number of international, Atlantic and Latin passengers increased 14.9 percent, 17.4 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively, versus the same period last year.
“May’s strong unit revenue performance was driven by Delta’s expanding international presence and the company’s commitment to domestic capacity rationalization,” said Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s executive vice president -- Network Planning and Revenue Management. “With continued yield growth, summer demand strength and growth in our cargo and ancillary revenues, we expect a solid summer. Our pre-emptive move in March to cut capacity for this fall leaves us well positioned to continue to deliver on our revenue targets.”
Delta Air Lines operates service to more worldwide destinations than any airline with Delta and Delta Connection flights to 324 destinations in 62 countries. Delta has added more international capacity than any major U.S. airline during the last two years and is the leader across the Atlantic with flights to 43 trans-Atlantic markets. Delta CEO Says Company ‘Holds Best Hand in the Industry’
Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) CEO Richard Anderson today told shareowners that Delta “holds the best hand in the industry.” Anderson outlined several areas of success including the best employees in the industry, double-digit top line growth and the continuous expansion of the airline’s international network.
Anderson also acknowledged the challenges the airline faces as a result of the record-breaking cost of fuel. “The company is performing well but faces headwinds due to the cost of fuel. We are proactively managing the issue in this environment while sticking to the greater strategy of Delta Air Lines.”
Anderson identified several efforts the company has made during the past months to combat the cost of fuel including domestic capacity reductions, various revenue initiatives and an aggressive multi-year fuel hedging portfolio which is currently valued at more than $1 billion.
“It’s very important to note the contribution of the Delta employees over the last few years,” Anderson continued. “The airline is running extremely well, producing the best on-time performance among the network carriers in 2007.”
Two proposals were put before the stockholders for approval. A preliminary tabulation of votes cast showed that the stockholders elected all nominees to Delta's Board of Directors by a substantial majority of the votes cast. In addition, the stockholders ratified the appointment of Ernst & Young LLP as Delta’s Independent Registered Public Accounting Firm for 2008. Final results of the voting will be published on Delta’s Web site, as well as in its next quarterly report on Form 10-Q.
