Sandy Toes Goes..... to Tybee Island

Hints of spring are everywhere.  The days are getting longer and the trees are getting ready to burst out in their new spring coats.

Cabin fever had set in after the two months or so of cold, really cold weather and I was looking for a change of scenery.  Road trip!

We packed up for a girls' weekend and set off for Savannah.  The weather forecast was just perfect for late February and a nice warm sunny day was just what the toes needed.

We headed out to Tybee Island just on the outskirts of Savannah and had a great picnic on the beach.  Behind us, we could see the Tybee Island Light Station.

The Tybee Island Light Station was ordered in 1732 by General James Oglethorpe, and construction began in 1736.  The original lighthouse was destroyed by a storm in 1741.  The Tybee Lighthouse has been rebuilt several times.  Renovation of the lighthouse and its five acres which includes the Head Keepers Cottage began in 1999.

It was such a gorgeous day that we decided to climb the lighthouse.  After paying for our tickets at the adorable gift shop, we started our climb.  The climb is done in single file and your feet will touch 178 stairs as you wind around and around to the top.

The view is spectacular.  I, for one, was thrilled to have a window to look out of at each landing as our group paused so some of us could catch our breath!  The catwalk around the top of the lighthouse is not one for those who may have a little issue with heights, but it's worth the climb.  Just don't look down!

Take time on your next trip to Savannah to drive the short distance out to Tybee and enjoy the scenery and tour the lighthouse.

I think I must go back soon.  My only regret was I didn't have the time to check out to see if the old Sugar Shack is still on the island.  Ahh, now those are some great memories.

Sandy Toes

Celebrate Skidaway Marine Science Day with UGA Marine Extension on Saturday, Oct. 16

The University of Georgia Marine Extension Service invites adults and children to an afternoon of marine science programs, displays, tours and hands-on activities at Skidaway Marine Science Day 2010 on Saturday, Oct. 16, from noon to 4 p.m. on Skidaway Island.

Skidaway Marine Science Day will feature an open house of the Skidaway Island campus with activities, primarily related to marine science, for all ages from young children to adults. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

The event will be presented by the campus’s marine research and education organizations, including the University of Georgia Marine Education Center and Aquarium and the UGA Shellfish Research Laboratory, both part of the university’s Marine Extension Service, as well as the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and WSVH Georgia Public Radio.

The UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium will be open with no admission fee. In addition, the aquarium education staff will offer visitors a full afternoon of activities including science talks, a reptile show, boat tours, touch tanks, and behind-the-scene tours of the aquarium. The Savannah Blood Alliance will be on-site and will make donations to the aquarium for each blood donor. FM radio WZAT 102.1 will be broadcasting the event, live.

The UGA Shellfish Laboratory will provide visitors with displays and information on marine life on the Georgia Coast. Children will be given the opportunity to help protect the marine environment by bagging oyster shells used for oyster reef restoration projects.

The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography will offer a variety of activities for adults and children, including tours of the Research Vessel Savannah and smaller research vessels; science displays and talks on current research programs; and hands-on science activities.

The staff of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary will set up their remotely-operated-vehicle in a swimming pool and teach visitors how to drive it and pick up objects from the bottom of the pool.

WSVH Georgia Public Radio will be open for visitors.

Another activity at this year’s Skidaway Marine Science Day will be a high-tech treasure hunt dubbed “Skiocache.” The event is modeled after the increasingly popular “geocache” activities in which treasure hunters use GPS devices to track down the locations of hidden prizes. Using their own GPS devices, they will track down the various piles of hidden loot. Participants without a GPS device will still be able to participate and will receive a different set of clues.

Skidaway Institute professor Bill Savidge will present a special program aimed at parents and students involved in science fair projects. The program, “How to prepare a successful science fair project,” will be presented twice, at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the McGowan Library Auditorium.

For the second year in a row, Skidaway Marine Science Day will also be open to non-campus scientific and environmental groups. Organizations such as the Georgia Conservancy and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center will be on-hand to present information, displays and activities.

School classes or other large groups wishing to attend Skidaway Marine Science Day can be accommodated only through advance arrangements. For additional information, call 912/598-2338.

All activities at Skidaway Marine Science Day will be free. For additional information, call 912/598-2338, or see www.marex.uga.edu/aquarium.

Carbo House Listed in the National Register of Historic Places

The Carbo House, located on Tybrisa Street, on Tybee Island, Chatham County, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 21, 2010. The Carbo House was built in 1932 as part of a rebuilding campaign following a devastating 1931 fire that destroyed 25 buildings in the boarding house area. J.D. and Nan Carbo of Waycross built their first, smaller rooming house on Tybee circa 1920 on Izlar Avenue.

After the 1931 fire, the Carbos purchased additional property and built this larger, 16-room boarding house facing 16th Street. By 1935 the Carbos had expanded their business by adding a restaurant, called Carbo’s Grill, and a patio area with a soda and sandwich stand between the boarding house and the restaurant. After Nan’s death in 1937 and J.D.’s death in 1938, the Carbo House continued to be operated by family members until 1972. The building remains in use as a rental property.

The Carbo House was listed at the state level of significance as an excellent and intact example of a coastal resort boarding house that retains its original materials and floor plan, and represents Tybee’s boarding house district located between 16th and 18th streets. The district featured an assortment of boarding houses and rental cottages that were available for rent by the week, month, or season. The building is one of the few historic boarding houses left on Tybee Island. In the first decades of the 20th century, Tybee Island, also known as Savannah Beach, developed as a coastal resort for residents of nearby Savannah. The opening of the Tybee Road in 1923, a causeway that linked the island with Savannah, fueled the demand for small inns, rooming houses, and apartments for middle-class vacationers.

The building is rectangular in shape with a low-pitched, hip roof and wide-overhanging eaves. The two-story, wraparound porch with a balustrade and chamfered wood posts extends along all sides of the building. Wood exterior staircases located on each side of the building provide access to the second-story rooms. The first and second floors are identical with original, five-panel, wood doors leading to each of the 16 rooms and four-over-one sash windows. The building retains its original floor plan with four equal-size rooms facing Tybrisa Street and four facing the rear of the property on each floor. Ten of the 16 rooms retain the original beadboard walls and ceilings, hardwood floors, door and window surrounds, and moldings.

The National Register of Historic Places is our country’s official list of historic buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts worthy of preservation. The National Register provides formal recognition of a property’s architectural, historical or archaeological significance. It also identifies historic properties for planning purposes and insures that these properties will be considered in the planning of state or federally assisted projects. National Register listing encourages preservation of historic properties through public awareness, federal and state tax incentives, and grants. Listing in the National Register does not place obligations or restrictions on the use, treatment, transfer, or disposition of private property.

The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources serves as Georgia’s state historic preservation office. Its mission is to promote the preservation and use of historic places for a better Georgia. HPD’s programs include archaeology protection and education, environmental review, grants, historic resource surveys, tax incentives, the National Register of Historic Places, community planning and technical assistance.

The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to sustain, enhance, protect and conserve Georgia’s natural, historic and cultural resources for present and future generations, while recognizing the importance of promoting the development of commerce and industry that utilize sound environmental practices.

Ten Great Places to Sleep With a Ghost

/PRNewswire/ -- Ghostly spirits make themselves as comfortable in America's B&Bs as living guests do, and not just in the dead of night. In a recent BedandBreakfast.com survey, innkeepers revealed that nearly 20% (about 3600) inns in the U.S. are haunted. Similarly, a current BedandBreakfast.com consumer survey showed that 20% of travelers seek a haunted inn for Halloween, so those who seek experiences with the world beyond can rest assured that they'll have a good chance of sleeping with a ghost. For a complete list of Halloween packages and over 100 great places to sleep with a ghost, visit http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/ and click Sleep with a Ghost. In alpha order by state, here is a sampling of B&B ghost stories:

Gate House Inn, Jackson, CA: A "Garden Ghost" appeared soon after overgrowth around the mansion was cleared away for new gardens. Although no paranormal activity has been reported inside, the surrounding land has a ghostly presence.

Kehoe House B&B, Savannah, GA: This B&B is reputed to be haunted by the ghosts of twin Kehoe children who may have died while playing in one of the house's fireplaces (now blocked up). Many sightings of the ghosts and the night-time sounds of children laughing and playing are detailed on the inn's website.

Old Bridge Inn, Jeffersonville, IN: Guests have seen floating objects, canes picked up and twirled around, tea cups floating across the room and candles being raised up then down on their own. A small dog named Buttons has also been seen.

Deerfield Inn, Deerfield, MA: Flashing lights, knocks on doors when no one is there, moving books, and tables moved into the middle of the room are regular occurrences, especially in rooms 48, 43 and 41. The ghost is believed to be the original owner of the house, Cora Carlisle, still hanging around as the inn celebrates 125 years of history.

Coach Stop Inn, Bar Harbor, ME: This former tavern is home to Abbe, a spirited little girl who loves music. Strange noises, flickering lights and fleeting reflections may either be Abbe singing or additional spirits.

Bingham Hall B&B, New Ulm, MN: A man named Jake has been seen by innkeepers standing in the doorway, never going in or out. Additionally, guests feel a presence of someone watching, say the doors open by themselves, and hear noises.

Ghost Rails Inn, Alberton, MT: The railroading days live on in the form of a phantom brakeman, still awaiting his call upstairs in the old hotel, according to the tales of those who've seen him.

Carambola Inn B&B, Fuquay-Varina, NC: Both the distinctive scent of perfume plus a report of a friendly woman seen hovering about five inches off the ground indicate that former residents still linger on.

Mary-Penn B&B, Gettysburg, PA: A paranormal group recorded horse noises and voices in their basement, and from time to time guests claim to experience friendly spirits.

By The Side Of The Road Bed and Breakfast, Harrisonburg, VA: When the innkeeper went to turn off the basement light, an unseen presence grabbed her hand. Footsteps are mysteriously heard in hallways, and doors open and close on their own.

Savannah's 4th Annual Fiesta Latina

Saturday, the 20th of June, Savannah’s River Street will once again witness a transformation as Latin American Services Organization (LASO) and the City of Savannah’s Office of Cultural Affairs and others present the 4th Annual Fiesta Latina on the Río from 1:00 pm ‘til 9:00 pm. On that day, the hustle and bustle around Rousakis Plaza on River Street will take on a distinctive Latino flavor, with the sights and smells of Latin America and the Caribbean.

“¡FIESTA!” will fill the senses as it is interpreted by the 20 countries that make up Latin America. Live DJ’s and bands will bring the crowd to its feet with the rhythms of salsa, merengüe, cumbia, norteño, bachata, reggaetón and more while regional dance troupes put those rhythms into motion. Featured musical artists include last year’s popular “Serenata Band” from Atlanta, as well as many well-known local and regional artists. A stroll around the perimeter will further awaken the senses with artists sharing their memories of life south of the border – as well as their new lives among us - through stories, art and crafts. Venders will offer typical foods from their countries of origin. Community non-profits will offer information of service to Hispanics and their neighbors.

Manuel Cabrera, president of LASO’s board, “We are grateful to the City for once again conferring this opportunity to present our culture to our neighbors and friends through the Fiesta Latina. Hispanics may be recent arrivals or long-term residents, but we are all proud of our cultural traditions, and look forward to sharing them with others. We are equally proud of our new home, Savannah, and its tradition as a vibrant, welcoming, multi-cultural city. LASO has identified a broad representation of the many facets of Latino Culture: favorites from past years and new artists. We invite our neighbors and visitors to Savannah to join us on the 20th as we celebrate a ‘Fiesta on the River’.”

The Exposition begins Friday, April 17th and will run through Sunday, April 19th, 2009, Rain or Shine, at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum at 601 West Harris Street. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Sunday.

This year’s theme is “Our Square Roots” in honor of Savannah’s distinctive city planning and garden designs. Full-size exhibition gardens, lectures, informative demonstrations given by experts, children’s activities, and an open-air market with growers and garden-related merchandise are just a few of the featured events. Ingenuity reigns as competitors interpret the theme "Our Square Roots" by planting containers with their own distinct styles and personalities. Visitors will be able to bid to purchase the container gardens in a silent auction held throughout the weekend.

Competing in several categories, exhibition garden designers are limited only by their imaginations as they interpret our theme and design gardens that will delight the senses and showcase their talents. These gardens will inspire you whether you're an amateur gardener or an experienced gardening enthusiast!

Savannah's Tara Feis 2009 March 14

Savannah’s Emmet Park will be transformed into a vision of the Emerald Isle during the City of Savannah’s Tara Feis Irish Celebration, taking place Sat., Mar. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Topping the line-up will be Grammy-nominated Celtic music group, Cherish the Ladies.

Now in its eighteenth year, the family-friendly feis (pron. FESH) – or festival – will be a feast for the eyes, ears and palate, with live performances, food, art activities, crafts and games hosted with Irish ceremony, tradition and hospitality. As in previous years, Tara Feis is a free, non-alcoholic event geared towards families and children.

“It is thrilling to see Tara Feis grow in popularity every year,” said Bernadette Winters, chairperson of the Tara Feis Planning Committee. “Irish heritage is an important aspect of Savannah’s cultural background, and we are pleased that so many people come to Tara Feis every year to learn about, appreciate and celebrate our traditions and heritage.”

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with an official Irish opening ceremony, headed by local and international dignitaries. The main stage will feature plenty of traditional Irish dancing, as well as live performances by notables such as local folksinger Harry O’Donoghue and musical duo Seldom Sober. Two performances by Grammy-nominated traditional Irish music group Cherish The Ladies will highlight this year’s feis.

Taking their name from a traditional Irish jig, "The Ladies" -- as they are affectionately called -- received recognition as the first and only all-women traditional Irish band. Over the past twenty years, they have established themselves as performers without peer, playing throughout the world at international festivals, concert halls and even at The White House. With their unique blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture in an engaging and entertaining package. 'Cherish The Ladies' has been named "Best Musical Group of the Year" by the BBC, "Entertainment Group of the Year" by the Irish Voice Newspaper, chosen as the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall's "International Group of the Year," and voted the "Top North American Celtic Act" by National Public Radio’s Thistle and Shamrock program.
The Tara Feis children’s stage will feature a full day of entertainment, including performances from storymaker Sean Driscoll, the puppets of Conrad Hartz and traditional Irish dancing performances from Glor na h’Eireann Irish Dance School and the Irish Dancers of Savannah.

The ancient art of the Seanachie, or Irish Storyteller, will come to life as master Seanachie Batt Burns tells the tales of the colorful characters of the Hills of County Kerry, Ireland, where he lived most of his life. Burns' has performed at festivals, clubs and campuses throughout the U.S. and internationally. His new book, "The King with Horse's Ears and Other Irish Folktales" was released in February.

Tara Feis is free and open to the public. Emmet Park is located in downtown Savannah at the east end of Bay Street. For a performance schedule or more information, please contact (912) 651-6417 or visit www.savannahga.gov/arts.

Johnny Mercer and Valentine’s Gala to Highlight 2009 Georgia Days Events

The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) has announced the schedule of events for Georgia Days 2009, to be held February 3-14 in commemoration of the 276th anniversary of the founding of the Georgia colony. Thousands of parents, students, educators, and governmental officials participate in the Society’s annual statewide event. Each year during the Georgia Days series of events, GHS honors individuals who have significantly influenced Georgia and American history.

Taking a page from modern history and popular culture, the Society has named Savannah native and American music legend Johnny Mercer as Historic Honoree of the 2009 celebration. “Next year is the centennial of Johnny Mercer’s birth,” says GHS President and CEO Dr. Todd Groce, “and we are pleased and proud to join others across the state as we honor this native son whose remarkable 50-year career was deeply grounded in and influenced by his Savannah and Georgia roots.”

In addition to traditional events that include the Colonial Faire and Muster at Wormsloe, Super Museum Sunday, Black History Month Essay and Public Speaking Contest, and school children, costumed characters and dignitaries parading through Savannah’s historic district, the Georgia Days 2009 will feature the second annual Birthday Bash and Annual Award Gala, entitled Magic in the Moonlight.

“Our inaugural gala was a wonderfully well received success,” says Laura García-Culler, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Society, “and Magic in the Moonlight will provide our members and friends with a memorable, very romantic night out on February 14, Valentine’s Day.” “In addition to fine dining and dancing, and the music of Johnny Mercer, political commentators James Carville and Mary Matalin – Washington’s most captivating couple – will keynote the event with a talk entitled All’s Fair in Love, War and Politics.

The evening will also include Governor Sonny Perdue inducting the first new Georgia Trustees since 1749, part of an exciting new partnership between the GHS and the State of Georgia that will annually recognize in perpetuity selected Georgians who have made outstanding contributions to our state’s history. Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus will be in attendance for his induction as one of the first Georgia Trustees in 260 years.” Born in downtown Savannah in 1909, young Johnny Mercer absorbed the rich musical culture of coastal Georgia.

He spent time in his youth at the Pin Point Oyster Company on the Back River, later renamed Moon River, listening to songs in the Geechee dialect that would later inspire his world-famous lyrics. He wrote his first song at age 15 and, without formal musical training, went on to pen over 1,000 songs; collaborate with such well known musical talents as Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Arlen, Marvin Hamlisch, Bobby Darin, and Andre Previn; and win four Academy Awards®. As a co-founder of Capitol Records, he was instrumental in discovering and launching the careers of Nat “King” Cole, Stan Kenton and Peggy Lee, among others.

Johnny Mercer’s music will be featured throughout the Georgia Days schedule. Less well known are his talents as an illustrator and painter, and the public is invited to view examples of his drawings and paintings, hear his music, and enjoy champagne and sweets at the Georgia Days Kickoff event, Pardon My Southern Accent: The Life and Legacy of Johnny Mercer in Word, Song, and Art, to be held February 3 at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church on Calhoun Square in downtown Savannah.

Below is a complete list of Georgia Days 2009 events commemorating the founding of the Georgia Colony. Note that some times and locations may change or are yet to be determined. Check www.georgiahistory.com for the latest information.

Georgia Days Kickoff Event Pardon My Southern Accent: The Life and Legacy of Johnny Mercer in Word, Song, and Art Tuesday, February 3, 2009. In this family-friendly event, professional entertainer Jim Wann explores the life and contributions of Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer by providing biographical information interspersed with musical selections from Mercer’s extensive body of work, as well as personal reminiscences of Johnny collected from local Savannahians. A reception that will include a rare viewing of several of Mercer’s original watercolors, as well as a display of Mercer’s childhood art will continue the exploration of this multi-talented artist.

Enjoy a live concert of the music of 2009 Historic Honoree Johnny Mercer. Free and open to the public. St. Vincent's Annual Historic Tour of Homes and Tea on October 18

St. Joseph’s/Candler presents the St. Vincent’s Academy Annual Historic Tour of Homes and Tea. The tour will be held on Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. This popular self-guided tour is of the original 1845 Convent building and eight private homes in Savannah’s Historic District.

St. Vincent’s has enjoyed an enduring relationship with St. Joseph’s since 1875, when the Sisters of Mercy established St. Joseph’s Hospital in downtown Savannah. Proceeds from the Tour & Tea benefit the preservation and restoration of the historic Convent.

This year’s tour of homes promises to take visitors for a fascinating look inside historical residences in Savannah’s beautiful landmark Historic District. Some of the homes reflect their 19th century origin in architectural style, interiors and furnishings, while others offer an exciting contemporary approach to downtown living. Onsite docents will provide history of the sites and will be available for directions and questions.

The centerpiece of Savannah's only fall tour of homes is the elegant tea which will be served on the grounds of the St. Vincent’s Convent. Academy students will serve a delicate repast of tea, homemade confections and traditional tea sandwiches.

Come see for yourself why native Savannahians and out-of-towners alike say this annual fall event is “the best tour in Savannah.”

The tour hours are 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 18. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.svatourofhomes.com, call or 912.819.7780.

Tickets will also be available on event day at the tour ticket office (Walsh Hall at St. Vincent’s, located at the corner of Lincoln and Harris Streets in downtown Savannah) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Cash, check and credit cards will be accepted.
