Georgia Aquarium Makes U.S. History with Display of Manta Ray

T2F Note: The Georgia Aquarium is among our favorite destinations in the Atlanta area. We have been there several times and still marvel at the beauty of the animals shown.

The manta ray is the largest of all rays, weighing up to 6,000 lbs and measuring up to 26 feet in width. It has a unique body shape, with an extremely broad head and an enormous, wide mouth flanked by two broad, flexible lobes. These fins are kept rolled and pointed forward, except when the manta is feeding. Its tail is whip-like, but short, and does not have a barb or spine. The manta ray is primarily a plankton feeder, but also consumes small and moderate-sized fishes. It is listed as "near threatened" on the IUCN Red List.

PRNewswire/ -- The Georgia Aquarium announced today the addition of a manta ray to the 6.3 million gallon Ocean Voyager gallery, built by The Home Depot. The addition of the female manta ray, Nandi, makes Georgia Aquarium the only aquarium in the United States to ever house a manta ray and one of only four aquariums in the world to display this species. Nandi will join four whale sharks and thousands of other animals in the world's largest aquarium exhibit.

"As the Georgia Aquarium grows as a tourist destination, our opportunity to promote conservation and education grows," said Mike Leven, chief executive officer of the Georgia Aquarium. "The addition of Nandi, who inspired hundreds of thousands of people in South Africa, gives us the opportunity to elevate her as an ambassador for her species. Millions of people who may have never had the chance to see a manta ray will now have that chance at the Georgia Aquarium."

Nandi, who measures more than nine feet across and weighs approximately 456 lbs, flew 9,000 miles on a chartered 747-200 aircraft from Durban, South Africa through Cape Verde, Africa, to Atlanta. The manta ray was under the care and supervision of Georgia Aquarium and uShaka Marine World professional staff and maintained by a highly advanced marine life support system.

"The Georgia Aquarium's success in moving whale sharks across the world gave us confidence that this was the right thing to do," said Dr. Mark Penning, executive director of uShaka Marine World. "We see this as a perfect opportunity to create an international partnership and continue Nandi's incredible story, raising worldwide awareness about manta rays."

Nandi was rescued from shark nets off the coast of Durban, South Africa, in April 2007 and rehabilitated by uShaka Marine World, the largest marine park in Africa. She has lived in uShaka for the past year, educating and inspiring conservation in more than 500,000 people.

Manta rays are the largest rays in the sea, but Nandi was young when she was rescued, measuring just more than eight feet across and weighing around 245 lbs. She had since outgrown her 580,000 gallon exhibit. In order to raise worldwide awareness about manta rays, Georgia Aquarium and uShaka created an international partnership to bring Nandi from South Africa to Georgia Aquarium.

"No one has ever done this before," said Leven. "Flying the world's largest ray, a manta ray, from one side of the world to the other and housing it in a U.S. aquarium for the first time is incredible. Having the opportunity to work with this animal and grow our understanding of this strange yet gentle giant will be an opportunity of a lifetime."

“Booooo” Y’all… Fall in America's Most Haunted City

T2F Note: We love Savannah! We're happy to wander around just soaking in her history and her charm. Although we have to admit we haven't seen any ghosts, we have no doubt the spirits of the past are still there today. Got a weekend urge to run? Run on down to Savannah and into her past.

Savannah, Est. 1733 is one of America’s oldest cities. Known for her charm, graciousness and good’ole southern hospitality, Savannah has been a popular vacation destination for the more than 6.9 million visitors who stroll her verdant squares and cobble stone streets each year.

Part of Savannah’s quirky and mysterious charm lies in her rich history, most of which is sprinkled with some unique flavor. Celebrated along with Savannah’s crowning accomplishments, come the tales and legends about the supernatural side of America’s Most Haunted City.

Available year round, Savannah’s Ghost Tours take visitors on a trip back through time with stories of pirates, lost loves and tales of woe. Local guides combine history and folklore with a tad of the supernatural into historical and entertaining tours.

In the fall, when the weather gets brisk and dusk comes a bit earlier, Savannah’s squares glow with lantern light as visiting ghost hunters walk the streets in search of ghost, goblins and other things that go “bump” in the night.

• The American Institute of Parapsychology named Savannah, America’s Most Haunted City.

• In October, preservation groups and tour companies offer a variety of graveyard tours where costumed performers re-live the tales of those buried in some of Georgia’s oldest cemeteries.

• The Haunted Pub Crawl is a great way to hear spooky stories told by some of Savannah’s bartenders and guides as pints of Guinness or the liquid libation of your choice are downed to subdue the goose bumps!

• The “Scandals” tour takes visitors though the tales and lives of some of Savannah’s more newsworthy indiscretions of the Victorian era.

• Several of Savannah’s historic restaurants and inns offer guests the opportunity to dine and reside with ghost. The 17 Hundred 90 Inn was named in 2004 as America’s Most Haunted Inn. Come spend the night with a specter or two … if you dare!

• Hearse Tours give you the opportunity to take the ride of your life in a converted hearse down Savannah’s cobblestone streets.

(ARA) - America’s wavering economy along with swelling gas prices have tampered with vacationers’ travel plans throughout the summer, leaving many travelers in the lurch. As wallets continue to tighten and stress levels rise, Americans are realizing just how much they need and deserve a vacation getaway that for now seems to be tossed on the backburner.

But despite fuel costs and financial worries, there is good news on the horizon for determined vacationers! As the seasons transition, Americans don’t have to throw in the towel on travel for the rest of the year. Simply learn to travel smarter by taking extended weekend getaways during the autumn shoulder season.

There are many ways to cut costs and allow for a fabulous fall trip. Here are some insider tips that will help you de-stress and recharge, while getting the most for your travel dollar:

Structure a Budget

First and foremost, figure out what you can realistically afford for your next trip, and stick to your guns. Create budget estimates for each vacation day, from meals to attractions, and even highway tolls. By understanding how much you have available before leaving home, you’ll save yourself the headache of ATM overdraws and never-ending credit card bills once you return from your trip.

Make a Smart Destination Choice and Create a Realistic Timeframe

Choose a destination that is close enough to reach quickly and cost-efficiently, but is a world away in ambiance. Do your homework and peruse through guidebooks, travel blogs, Web sites and newspaper and magazine reviews for destinations that provide climate-friendly options in which to spend a relaxing long weekend.

Choose the Right Accommodations

Select a hotel with an in-room kitchen efficiency so you don’t have to eat every meal in restaurants (that gets expensive!), and find a nearby grocery store so you can stock up with a few provisions. You’ll be amazed at how much money eating cereal for breakfast and packing cold cuts for lunch can save you each day. If you’re traveling with a larger group or family, check out beach homes, condos, timeshares and villa rentals, which can turn out to be a much less expensive option, per person.

Now is the time to also look for deals and offerings such as free nights, complimentary parking, or special incentives (like gas cards). With fewer people traveling these days, many hotels are offering attractive deals to get visitors in the door.

Research Affordable Activities

Seek out a destination with lots of activities that are free or highly affordable. When researching things to do or see in a destination, find attractions that will stretch your dollar the farthest. Savvy travelers will also plan in advance to save money through online coupons and deals. As a bonus, you’ll reduce stress while on vacation because your itinerary is already set.

By following the above tips, you’ll surely find and enjoy a long weekend break that fits within your budget. One terrific place you might wish to consider when putting these tips to the test is the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina. Known best as an affordable, budget-friendly vacation destination with a vast variety of accommodations, meals and attractions to suit every visitor, this is a great option for the smart traveler. Here’s why:

Location and Weather
Boasting a mild climate and perpetually temperate weather, Myrtle Beach is a great destination choice year round, especially in the autumn. Its pristine coastline, affectionately called the Grand Strand, is the star attraction here. Stretching for 60 miles, travelers have access to all kinds of public beaches and oceanfront access, from state parks to picturesque waterways -- the perfect oasis away from the stress of everyday life.

Quality Accommodations with Perks
With a variety of accommodations from which to choose, including many updated and spacious beachfront condos with kitchens and additional seasonal promotions, Myrtle Beach offers great deals for saving money on food and lodging costs.

A Variety of Affordable Activities
Whether it’s hitting Myrtle Beach State Park to enjoy the pristine beach for pennies or even popping a quick game of miniature golf -- Myrtle Beach is the Miniature Golf Capital of the World -- there are plenty of options to have fun on a budget in Myrtle Beach.

For further incentives, vacationers can get a great bang for their buck at Myrtle Beach’s acclaimed attractions. At Brookgreen Gardens, a beautiful nature oasis on the site of four former rice plantations, your entry ticket is good for an entire week. And if you visit Hard Rock Park -- the world’s first 140-acre, music-themed amusement park -- on the day of a big-name concert, you’ll be admitted free to that evening’s concert.

The moral of the story? If you’re itching to use some of those precious vacation days for an extended weekend this fall, choose a destination that has it all within reach. With the right combination of budget-friendly activities, great weather, and a mix of fun and relaxation, you’ll be sure to have an unforgettable and much-deserved getaway.

Delta Air Lines Waives All Excess Bag Fees for Military Personnel

(PRIME NEWSWIRE) (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Delta Air Lines announced on Friday that effective immediately it will waive all excess baggage fees for active military personnel traveling on orders. The fee waivers apply to baggage quantity, weight and size, allowing active servicemen and women to travel with optimum flexibility.

"Delta has a long tradition of supporting our troops and it is important that they find travel with us welcoming and flexible," said Steve Gorman, Delta's executive vice president - Operations. "We respect the courage our military men and women display every day and the people of Delta find it an honor to serve them."

Delta's support of the troops extends beyond flexible travel policies to include offering complimentary military lounges across the system during peak travel times; supporting the active military leaves of more than 450 Delta employees; and operating dozens Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) missions over the years to support troop movements during times of war. Additionally, the airline has repeatedly received the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve's (ESGR) Freedom Award for its support of Delta employees serving in the National Guard and military reserve units. In 2006, Delta was named a "5-Star Employer" by the ESGR, recognizing the airline's above-and-beyond assistance to guardsmen and reservists.

In 2007, Delta updated its military leave of absence policy to respond to the needs of military members in the 21st century. The policy offers Delta employees serving on active Guard or Reserve duty continued eligibility for medical and dental programs; continuing coverage under Delta's basic and optional life insurance programs; ongoing Delta flight privileges; and continuous vacation accrual. ESGR has cited Delta's military leave policies as a model for other major employers.

Delta Air Lines operates service to more worldwide destinations than any airline with Delta and Delta Connection flights to 312 destinations in 61 countries. Delta has added more international capacity than any major U.S. airline during the last two years and is the leader across the Atlantic with flights to 44 trans-Atlantic markets. Gators and Snakes, and Oh My!

It's been a few years since we had stopped to tour the Edisto Island Serpentarium on Edisto Island, South Carolina. So, on this trip, we came back for an encore visit. What a treat this place is. That is, if you are interested in learning about snakes and reptiles!

While I am not a personal fan of these slithery creatures or the prehistoric looking reptiles, I can appreciate their beauty and niche in the world.

The Edisto Island Serpentarium is a family owned operation and worth a stop. The owners truly care about the animals and teaching others about conservation in the ACE basin. If I remember correctly, their collection of alligators all have local roots. These guys are not afraid to go and catch them, or to teach others. Feeding time is interesting as the alligators see the owner with the bucket of treats and literally all line up for feeding. It's truly amazing to see how fast these guys can move when there is food involved. I do have to admit the close proximity of these guys to my family did make my tummy get a little queasy.

In addition to the alligators, there are plenty of snakes to view. Some are in some really big pits just kind of lying around. That is, I hope they are! It was surprising to realize that their snakes can also get dirty and have to have their open pits cleaned. One of the pits was closed on this particular visit until they could finish cleaning it out. No matter as there are plenty of others to see.

There is also the snake show which teaches the visitors about these creatures. Once again, I have to sit on the back row, but I always see it. As much as I am not a fan of the snakes, I do understand the need to be able to distinguish between the good and the bad boys.

The guys at the Serpentarium not only care for the animals, they also collect the venom so anti-venom can be made. Good job, mates!

There are also plenty of iguanas on display. These overgrown lizards don't hurt anyone (that I know of) and are rather prehistoric looking in their own right.

When you are in the area, take a break from the beach and spend a few hours at the Serpentarium. You'll come out knowing a little more about these animals. Perhaps, you'll even appreciate their watchful beady, oh I mean beautiful, eyes.

I'm proud to say that we came out with all of our fingers and toes intact!

Until next time,
Sandy Toes
While on Edisto

Bob Barr Calls for Federal Airline Tax Refunds

“Airline fares are rocketing upward, along with higher fuel prices,” notes Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party presidential nominee. “And so are government taxes. Yet even if you cancel the ticket, you still get stuck with the tax. And if you change your flight, you get hit again,” notes Barr.

“Anyone who looks at the cost breakdown when they buy a ticket will see a federal excise tax, a security fee, and airport charges. They make even a cheap ticket expensive for many families,” notes Barr. “And it’s not obvious that we get good value for our money—ask yourself how safe you feel the next time you are standing in an airport security line and the TSA employees confiscate someone’s bottle of water.”

“Even more outrageous, though, the government keeps your money even if you change your ticket,” he notes. “At least the airlines give you credit—minus a hefty ‘change fee,’ of course. But the federal government just pockets the money. When asked about this unfair practice, government employees say that’s just the way the regulations are written—regulations that they, of course, wrote!”

“The airport taxes might be small change compared to the federal income tax, but they exemplify how the government cares more about collecting money than treating taxpayers fairly. That will change in a Barr administration,” he says.

“One of the priorities of my administration will be to sharply cut and significantly simplify federal taxes. We pay too much and spend too much time figuring out how much we have to pay. That needs to change,” insists Barr. “Lowering and simplifying taxes will make all of us better off, and make our country both freer and more prosperous.”

Barr adds, “I will also ensure that the American people stop paying taxes on services that they don’t receive. Like airline travel. We don’t let businesses get away with charging us for services that they don’t perform. We should hold government to the same standard. As President Barr will do.”

Bob Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia in the U. S. Heading Out to the Inns: Summer Travelers Discover Mount Dora B&Bs

(PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- After checking out Orlando's attractions, a growing number of domestic and international travelers are checking into the bed and breakfasts of nearby Mount Dora. Here, amidst the smell of orange blossoms and views of majestic Lake Dora, they are discovering nearly a dozen boutique inns, cottages, and guest houses where they can enjoy another Old Florida attraction: Southern hospitality.

Offering a peaceful retreat far from the hectic summer crowds at the theme parks, just thirty minutes northwest of Orlando's attractions are historic inns sprinkled throughout one of the state's most popular resort destinations. The setting is ideal. With a population of just over 10,000, Mount Dora remains one of Florida's most charming small towns, with rolling hills, citrus groves, an active shopping village, and New England feel.

Summertime, Mount Dora's 'Secret Season', has become a favorite time for Orlando visitors to make the drive to explore Lake County's famous eco-friendly offerings such as crystal clear freshwater springs, meandering rivers, and a chain of lakes. The town itself offers bookstores, sidewalk cafes, boutiques, and art galleries with a vista overlooking beautiful Lake Dora.

"Because of our size, we have the luxury -- and the privilege -- to provide honest and sincere hospitality," explains John Cataldo, president of the Mount Dora Lodging Association. "Each and every Mount Dora innkeeper provides a level of service, attention, and individuality that travelers won't find at a tourist-corridor hotel."

For more information on reserving your night at the inn, visit www.mountdoralodging.com, or call (352) 735-3110. Each inn affiliated with the Mount Dora Lodging Association has fulfilled local, county, state, and federal requirements and is reviewed regularly by state inspectors.

Like Action and Adventure? Travel to Scotland

(ARA) – If the typical tourist experience bores you to tears and you can’t take yet another bus tour, adventure travel just might be for you. Among thrill-seeking travelers, Scotland is quickly becoming known as a popular, action-packed destination.

Adventure travel is typically defined as experiencing the culture and tradition of a destination in an adrenaline-pumping approach. No souvenir shops or museums here! According to the Adventure Travel Trade Association, the adventure and experiential travel market is a $165 billion per year industry, and it’s growing.

Scotland is frequently an exciting travel destination because of its deep history, rugged and varied terrain and a myriad of options ranging from hiking to canyoneering. Activities are available for everyone from daring singles to families and groups of friends and include:

Hiking
Despite its relatively small size, Scotland has a wide variety of hiking options. Whether you’re in for a day hike or a week-long trek, there are trails and lodging options for all levels of interest. Scotland’s coast offers dramatic sea cliff walks in areas such as Shetland and, inland, Loch Ness. The open woodlands of Perthshire and the Isle of Skye also offer a great range of hikes.

Kayaking
Scotland is known in adventure circles as one of the best kayaking destinations on the planet. From your sea kayak, it’s not uncommon to see wildlife such as eagles, puffins, fox, otter, seals, dolphins and Minke whales intermingled with cliffs and ancient castles. Scottish outfitters can provide you with gear and a guide that will take you paddling in places like the rocky eastern coast, among the island archipelagos in the northeast and exploring the white sand beaches of the west.

White Water Rafting
Of the so-called “adrenaline sports,” white water rafting is one of the most prevalent. Using large rafts, six to eight people, with the help of an experienced guide, will travel down rivers with rushing rapids that range from tame to downright dangerous. The River Garry, the River Tay and the River Tummel are popular, challenging and exhilarating rafting destinations.

Mountain Biking
Scotland’s terrain offers exciting and bone-crushing mountain biking opportunities. In eastern Scotland, aptly called “Whisky Country,” the Cairngorms are some of the highest mountains in the country. But nothing beats the famous Scottish Highlands for spectacular sights and forested routes best experienced on a bike.

If just one experience isn’t enough and you’re really looking to find your inner warrior, the search is on for teams of modern-day rebels to take place in the ultimate challenge: the Drambuie Pursuit. Taking place in April 2009, the Drambuie Pursuit is a once-in-a-lifetime outdoor adventure race across the Scottish Highlands that retraces the legendary journey of Scotland’s Bonnie Prince Charlie, for whom the bracing spirit was created in 1745.

Teams of four adults will have a chance to win an all-inclusive free trip to battle against one another in speedboats and dirt buggies, scale mountains, kayak and raft through rushing rapids and bike over the punishing terrain from the Isle of Skye to Inverness. For more information on the Drambuie Pursuit, visit www.Pursuitof1745.com to register for free.
