Live Your Dreams and Passion for Travel: Become a Tour Director

(ARA) - What do I really want to do with the rest of my life? Am I going to let another year go by, wasting my time, doing what I don’t want to do? These are tough questions we have all asked ourselves at one time or another.

Perhaps travel is your passion and you live to feel the excitement of not knowing what is around the next corner. Or maybe you want to do something meaningful and share your knowledge with others to make a difference. If you answered yes to these questions, it's certain that your DNA is programmed for tour directing.

Travel has always been the most important medium to self-discovery. The interactions each day with people, cultures and backgrounds different than your own offer perspectives unmatched in any other profession.

Leading tours not only provides countless opportunities for personal fulfillment, creativity and happiness, it can also be quite lucrative. Certified tour directors are part of an elite group of travelers. Besides getting a free trip to worldwide tourist destinations including meals, expenses and private accommodations, tour directors earn approximately $200 to $250 per day.

Tour directing is not for everyone. As satisfying as tour directing is, it can be quite demanding at times. It requires you to be creative, think on your feet and utilize all of your leadership skills. Being able to laugh at yourself is a great attribute when things don’t go according to plan, cautions Ted Bravos, co-founder of the International Tour Management Institute (ITMI), a state-certified school for training tour directors.

Since 1976, ITMI has been helping thousands of people discover how they can make a difference, grow as individuals and simply enjoy their life in a whole new way. The beauty of following your heart's desire to travel as a tour director is that you can still be the caretaker of your personal and financial responsibilities, while transforming your passions and dreams into reality.

Obviously, there has been a change in the travel industry, just as there has been a change in every segment of the global economy. However, the tour industry is so diverse that most tour directors work on a freelance basis with numerous different tour companies throughout the year, even as they maintain a completely different form of employment.

The secret to creating your dream life as a tour director is to have other work that is flexible enough to allow time off throughout the year. Maybe you have a few hours, a week, a month or more. Most tour directors are very entrepreneurial and actually own their own business or freelance their skills with a flexible and understanding employer.

ITMI has been conducting intensive 15-day training programs for people to become tour directors for over three decades. Students learn about the tour industry through practical “hands-on” experience in the field, and five days training aboard a touring motor coach including a two-day overnight tour where they actually perform the role of a tour director. ITMI not only trains you how to be a tour director, they also train you how to get a job with free lifetime placement assistance.

You can view a free 90 minute on-line Tour Directing Video by visiting the ITMI Web site at www.itmisf.com. You can also e-mail travel@itmisf.com or call (800) 442-4864 to learn more about tour directing.

King and Queen of Spain to Visit Pensacola for Its 450th Anniversary

/PRNewswire/ -- Celebrate Pensacola, Inc., along with city officials announced today that King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia will visit the city during its 450th anniversary celebration. Pensacola, founded by Spain in 1559, is one of the first European settlements in the United States.

"A visit from King Juan Carlos I is the highlight of the city's year-long celebration," said Mayor John Fogg. "His visit will bring our city international attention, confirming the significance of Pensacola's place in history as North America's first major European settlement."

While in town, the king and queen will tour the Pensacola Bay Area and its historic landmarks. Stops include Naval Air Station Pensacola, Pensacola Beach and the Pensacola Historic District. The king will make a public appearance at noon on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the TT Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum.

Other events planned throughout the year for Pensacola's 450th anniversary include the Pensacola Wine Festival, Miguel Zapata art exhibit, Battle of Pensacola reenactment, Heritage Festival, a visit from the tallship Juan Sebastian de Elcano, a landing celebration, parades, concerts and more.

Spanish sailor Don Tristan de Luna arrived in Pensacola on August 15, 1559 with a contingent of more than 1,500 soldiers, servants, settlers, priests and Mexican Indians. Shortly after establishing the settlement, a hurricane destroyed supplies, eventually causing the Spanish to flee the area and not return until the late 1600s. In 1698, Presidio Santa Maria de Galve became the first permanent settlement in Northwest Florida. Remains of the fort can be found at Naval Air Station Pensacola. The city is proud of its Spanish heritage, historically significant events and landmarks.

Those Who Live Together Travel Together

(NAPSI)-Increasingly, family trips are including more than just mom, dad and the kids. A growing number of vacations include grandparents and other relatives-especially when those relatives live in the same household.

Multigenerational travel, also known as "togethering," has been on the rise over the last five years. And each year, according to the Travel Industry Association of America, more than 5 million family vacations include three generations. And while these trips have long been organized to mark big events, such as 50th anniversaries, 75th birthdays and college graduations, families are increasingly going places en masse "just because."

One mode of transportation that's particularly popular with families is train travel. That's because in addition to a sustainable way to travel, passengers are not distracted by electronics and can focus on the good food, stunning scenery and spending quality time with the family.

For example, Rocky Mountaineer Vacations offers a variety of customizable packages that let riders explore the beautiful destinations of Western Canada. Vacation packages range from two days to 17 days and feature service that's as spectacular as the scenery.

One of the most popular is the Classic Rail Vacation. This is a spectacular two-day, all-daylight journey onboard the Rocky Mountaineer with an additional night's accommodation in Vancouver and Banff. It includes rail station transfers in Vancouver, Kamloops and Banff; a one-day National Parks Pass; two breakfasts; two lunches; and three nights' hotel accommodation.

So whether riding the rails aboard the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff, or journeying along the Fraser Discovery Route through the countryside and early gold rush territory from Whistler to Jasper, there is plenty for everyone to see and do. And because the spacious coaches are roomy enough to accommodate dozens of passengers, the train can be a unique setting for a family reunion.

To learn more about multigenerational family travel and the Rocky Mountaineer rail vacation through Western Canada, visit www.rockymountaineer.com or call 1-800-665-7245 (toll-free in the U.S.).

Air Force Works Aggressively to Reduce Bird Strikes

As an ongoing investigation continues on a bird strike that caused a passenger jet's engines to fail last week after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport, Air Force safety officials said they're well-versed on the dangers of bird strikes and aggressively are working to prevent them.

National Transportation Safety Board officials confirmed initial indications that U.S. Airways flight 1549 struck a flock of birds, which were sucked into the engines and caused them to fail. The pilot, former Air Force pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, successfully landed the plane in New York's Hudson River and is credited with saving all 155 people on board.

The incident brought public focus to a problem the Air Force, along with the airline industry, has long struggled to overcome.

Last year alone, the Air Force experienced more than 4,000 bird strikes, Eugene LeBoeuf, chief of the Air Force's Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard, or BASH, program at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., told American Forces Press Service.

Fortunately, none of those bird strikes was classified as a "Class A" accident, one that results in a death or more than $1 million in damages, LeBoeuf said. But collectively, they cost the Air Force an estimated $35 million.

Bird strikes are on the rise, he said, and present a serious safety issue. The crash of an E-3B Airborne Warning and Control System plane in 1995 after takeoff from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, painfully drove that point home. All 24 crew members died when the plane struck a flock of Canada geese just after takeoff.

"When you have a bird strike, it's like throwing a rock into the engine," said Air Force Staff Sgt. Paul White, airfield operations supervisor at Andrews Air Force Base, Md. "It stops the turbine from spinning, and that can be catastrophic."

The BASH program works to avert accidents like the one at Elmendorf and last week's incident in New York. Based on a system of "integrated pest management," it aims to keep air bases, airfields and the air space and ground in and around them free of birds and wildlife that can hamper aircraft operations, LeBoeuf explained.

That's a challenge, he said, with more Canada geese taking up permanent residence in the United States, a burgeoning snow goose population and a comeback for the pelican population after DDT and other insecticides were banned.

But birds aren't the only problem, LeBoeuf said. He's seen it all: deer, coyotes, wild pigs and even alligators finding their way onto Air Force flightlines. "They're mobile speed bumps, and aircraft don't take kindly to them," he said.

Step one in the BASH program is "habitat alteration," which LeBoeuf defined as making airfields as uninviting as possible. Anything that might serve as a perch is removed, denying birds an elevated place to roost. Potential perches that can't be removed get spikes driven into them.

Meanwhile, low spots in the land where birds can hide or seek water that collects are filled in.

Dan Vredenburgh, a contractor who oversees Andrews Air Force Base's BASH program, follows the Air Force protocol of ensuring grass around the airfield is maintained between 7 and 14 inches. That's too short for ground birds to nest in, but too long for them to feel safe feeding in, he explained.

"These are the benign approaches, but if they don't work, we turn to more active techniques," LeBoeuf said. In a word, he defined that as "harassment."

Vredenburgh, for example, has a whole list of tricks to make Andrews unwelcoming to seagulls, blackbirds, starlings, turkey vultures, cowbirds, ducks and geese that frequent the region.

He fires off pyrotechnics and propane cannons as needed to scare birds from the 4,320-acre base. One of his most effective tools is Bree, a two-tone border collie that chases away birds or other wildlife that might be tempted to take up residence. Vrendenburg and Bree patrol the base regularly, and he sets her loose when he discovers birds roosting.

"When she takes off, they leave in a hurry," Vrendenburgh said. "After a couple of times, they probably won't come back."

Other bases use different techniques. The Royal Air Force base at Mildenhall in England, for example, relies on a Moroccan lanner hawk named Goldie to ward off unwanted birds. At Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan, a luger falcon named Mustang helps to keep unwanted birds at bay.

But no preventive measure will keep birds and other wildlife away indefinitely, LeBoeuf said. So as a last resort, BASH officials get the permits required to shoot, trap or otherwise remove them from the area.

At Andrews -- home of the 316th Wing as well as the 89th Airlift Wing that flies Air Force One and other aircraft in support of the president, vice president and senior U.S. leaders -- these measures are helping to reduce bird strikes.

Andrews reported 20 bird strikes last year, down from 30 in fiscal 2007 and an average of about 34 a year in past years, Vredenburgh said. Nearly all involved small birds, and none inflicted major aircraft damage or forced an emergency landing.

"We understand the importance of what we do, and believe we're helping reduce the problem through our efforts," he said.

"There's no question that the BASH program is making a difference," LeBoeuf said. "It saves lives and aircraft and allows us to maintain our mission. It's a very important program."

Late Winter Perfect Time to Hike Tate's Hell State Forest

With hundreds of thousands of protected acres to explore, hiking opportunities abound in Franklin County. And late winter is the perfect time to lace up those hiking boots and enjoy North Florida's rugged wilderness without the bugs or heat.

At Tate's Hell State Forest, the High Bluff Coastal Hiking Trail winds six miles through the forest, often paralleling St. George Sound. Informative visitor education exhibits are located along the trail and cover fire, coastal scrub ecosystems and the turpentine industry. Of special note, hikers can see the natural phenomenon of the dwarf cypress trees, which grow no more than 15 feet tall even though they are 150 years old, and are unique to the area.

These cypress wetlands coexist with five sulfur springs and several ponds formed by old borrow pits. Along the way, hikers can view these unique trees and the hydrology restoration program from an elevated boardwalk and observation tower.

The Florida Division of Forestry estimates Tate's Hell Forest contains more than 200,000 acres of hydric communities - prairie, wet Flatwoods, strand swamp, bottomland, bay gall and flood plain swamp - each providing ample plant-viewing opportunities.

Johnny Mercer and Valentine’s Gala to Highlight 2009 Georgia Days Events

The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) has announced the schedule of events for Georgia Days 2009, to be held February 3-14 in commemoration of the 276th anniversary of the founding of the Georgia colony. Thousands of parents, students, educators, and governmental officials participate in the Society’s annual statewide event. Each year during the Georgia Days series of events, GHS honors individuals who have significantly influenced Georgia and American history.

Taking a page from modern history and popular culture, the Society has named Savannah native and American music legend Johnny Mercer as Historic Honoree of the 2009 celebration. “Next year is the centennial of Johnny Mercer’s birth,” says GHS President and CEO Dr. Todd Groce, “and we are pleased and proud to join others across the state as we honor this native son whose remarkable 50-year career was deeply grounded in and influenced by his Savannah and Georgia roots.”

In addition to traditional events that include the Colonial Faire and Muster at Wormsloe, Super Museum Sunday, Black History Month Essay and Public Speaking Contest, and school children, costumed characters and dignitaries parading through Savannah’s historic district, the Georgia Days 2009 will feature the second annual Birthday Bash and Annual Award Gala, entitled Magic in the Moonlight.

“Our inaugural gala was a wonderfully well received success,” says Laura García-Culler, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Society, “and Magic in the Moonlight will provide our members and friends with a memorable, very romantic night out on February 14, Valentine’s Day.” “In addition to fine dining and dancing, and the music of Johnny Mercer, political commentators James Carville and Mary Matalin – Washington’s most captivating couple – will keynote the event with a talk entitled All’s Fair in Love, War and Politics.

The evening will also include Governor Sonny Perdue inducting the first new Georgia Trustees since 1749, part of an exciting new partnership between the GHS and the State of Georgia that will annually recognize in perpetuity selected Georgians who have made outstanding contributions to our state’s history. Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus will be in attendance for his induction as one of the first Georgia Trustees in 260 years.” Born in downtown Savannah in 1909, young Johnny Mercer absorbed the rich musical culture of coastal Georgia.

He spent time in his youth at the Pin Point Oyster Company on the Back River, later renamed Moon River, listening to songs in the Geechee dialect that would later inspire his world-famous lyrics. He wrote his first song at age 15 and, without formal musical training, went on to pen over 1,000 songs; collaborate with such well known musical talents as Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Arlen, Marvin Hamlisch, Bobby Darin, and Andre Previn; and win four Academy Awards®. As a co-founder of Capitol Records, he was instrumental in discovering and launching the careers of Nat “King” Cole, Stan Kenton and Peggy Lee, among others.

Johnny Mercer’s music will be featured throughout the Georgia Days schedule. Less well known are his talents as an illustrator and painter, and the public is invited to view examples of his drawings and paintings, hear his music, and enjoy champagne and sweets at the Georgia Days Kickoff event, Pardon My Southern Accent: The Life and Legacy of Johnny Mercer in Word, Song, and Art, to be held February 3 at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church on Calhoun Square in downtown Savannah.

Below is a complete list of Georgia Days 2009 events commemorating the founding of the Georgia Colony. Note that some times and locations may change or are yet to be determined. Check www.georgiahistory.com for the latest information.

Georgia Days Kickoff Event Pardon My Southern Accent: The Life and Legacy of Johnny Mercer in Word, Song, and Art Tuesday, February 3, 2009. In this family-friendly event, professional entertainer Jim Wann explores the life and contributions of Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer by providing biographical information interspersed with musical selections from Mercer’s extensive body of work, as well as personal reminiscences of Johnny collected from local Savannahians. A reception that will include a rare viewing of several of Mercer’s original watercolors, as well as a display of Mercer’s childhood art will continue the exploration of this multi-talented artist.

Enjoy a live concert of the music of 2009 Historic Honoree Johnny Mercer. Free and open to the public. Georgia Days Colonial Faire and Muster Saturday (Family Day) and Sunday, February 7-8, 2009 Wormsloe State Historic Site Friends and families of all ages enjoy this popular annual living history program featuring hundreds of costumed interpreters performing colonial-era military drill, dance, and music at the site of one of Georgia’s oldest and most beautiful coastal plantations. Demonstrations of musket and canon firing, crafts, and other aspects of daily life in the eighteenth century are given throughout this weekend-long event. Schedule of events is available upon arrival at this event.

To Rescue Americans' Travel Budgets in 2009, Worldwide Hotel Inventory on Sale for $1/Night at LastMinuteTravel.com

/PRNewswire/ -- Despite the flood of downbeat economic news, Americans are given a big reason to stay positive in the New Year with an opportunity to book the vacation of a lifetime for the cost of a movie ticket. For fifteen minutes per day, five days in a row late January/early February 2009, LastMinuteTravel.com will sell the entire world for a dollar per night, including every room in its inventory of over 15,000 global hotel partners.

This weeklong hotel deal has been created to inform the public of a new Undercover booking style launching in late January - one that guarantees the site's best possible hotel rates with last-minute prices, in advance.

"This sale is very real," explains Uri Argov, President and CEO of Last Minute Travel. "Because we guarantee our hotel partners are paid for all inventory listed with us, we can invest a half-million dollars in room revenue to drive travelers to our improved site."

There is a small catch: The appointed days and hours won't be divulged in advance. The only way to find out is to visit www.LastMinuteTravel.com/WorldForADollar to register to receive clues, scavenger-hunt style, via email, starting today. To expedite the booking process on launch day itself, web users are encouraged to visit the site in advance to become familiar with its hotel inventory and page layouts.

In this Undercover hotel model, similar to Hotwire, the name of the hotel is kept secret during booking, revealed after making the reservation. What makes the site different from others is that travelers will be provided everything except the hotel's name and address, including star ratings, a description of the hotel itself, its rooms, services, local area, a complete checklist of amenities and a map highlighting a radius around the general hotel location.

The site will also now provide travelers with an interactive "Destinations" page, set to feature the details of more than 100 locales worldwide. Each travel destination will be packed with traveler reviews, general information, photos, as well as details on the area's top hotels, attractions, shopping and dining experiences.

For travelers who prefer to know more when booking with the benefit of paying less, the opaque veil is lifted when joining the behind-the-scenes Last Minute Travel Club (http://www.lmtclub.com/). As America's first travel price club, the site offers travelers up to 65 percent in savings for each hotel booking, whether three or 300 days in advance. During the sale, members of the travel club will be ahead of the game, receiving email clues before other registered users.

For more information about Last Minute Travel's upcoming sale, its new Undercover style or for a full list of terms and conditions, visit the "World for a Dollar" homepage at www.LastMinuteTravel.com.

Myrtle Beach Resort Offers '2 for 1' Vacation Deal

/PRNewswire/ -- Sands Resorts of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has announced a unique Two-for-One vacation package they are offering to Spring and Summer guests of their seven Myrtle Beach resorts. Sands CEO, Lee Rawcliffe described the offer as a response to our current economy and a chance to introduce new and returning guests to the many renovations and new amenities he has added since purchasing the iconic hotel group in early 2008.

The promotion is unique in that it offers a free two-night Spring or Fall vacation and an additional free night in the summer to those booking a three-night or longer summer stay. The free two-night Spring or Fall vacation can be used as a two-night trip or as two individual night stays. These two nights can also be gifted or as their ad states, sold on "eBay." This may allow some creative families to secure a Myrtle Beach vacation for very little expense. Rawcliffe believes the program rewards intelligent shoppers and entrepreneurs, who he believes, are growing in number as the recession continues.

"Sure the economy is having an impact on leisure travel," says Rawcliffe, "I think anyone in our business would tell you that." Rawcliffe goes on to say, "Our main focus has always been the 'Experience,' and since our purchase we have invested heavily in remodeling, upgrades, and improved services. During my twenty years in the business, I have never experienced a day when we were not building or remodeling something. I like our guests to see that and many return the next year curious to witness the finished product."

Does Rawcliffe believe this "2 for 1" idea will catch on with the industry? "I don't know," he responds thoughtfully, "we are somewhat a seasonal resort, our hotel rooms, condos, and beach houses always have vacancies in the Spring and Fall. This rewards our guests with a chance to profit from that opportunity."

Rawcliffe plans to market the program on the company's web site: www.SandsResorts.com and through his reservation center: 800-726-3783. He also plans direct mail and media campaigns to promote the idea. "Recessions are interesting times," Rawcliffe says, "They cause businesses to reinvent themselves for the better and often reward consumers with better values." Sands Resorts has a thirty-six year history as a major lodging provider in the Myrtle Beach market. They have been pioneers in packaged golf and family entertainment.
