Fourth of July Holiday Travelers Expected to Increase 17.1 Percent, AAA says

/PRNewswire/ -- AAA today projected the number of Americans traveling this Fourth of July holiday weekend will increase 17.1 percent from 2009, with approximately 34.9 million travelers taking a trip at least 50 miles away from home. Last year, 29.8 million Americans traveled during the same period. The 2010 Fourth of July holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, July 1 to Monday, July 5.

"While financial markets continue to have volatility related to the European debt crisis, the landscape of the U.S. economy is in a much different place than it was one year ago," said Glen MacDonell, director, AAA Travel Services. "It is encouraging to see such growth this summer as Americans take to the road to visit family, friends and great vacation destinations."

MacDonell added, "AAA travel agents continue to report double-digit increases in the percentage of travelers making advanced reservations for cruises, and vacation packages and online hotel bookings via AAA.com are up over last year -- all of which are positive signs pointing to an increase in the number of Americans traveling this Fourth of July holiday."

As the Deepwater Horizon oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico continues, the situation is changing rapidly and the impact on tourism in the Gulf Coast region is still unknown. However, currently most beaches remain open and while AAA offices have reported member inquiries regarding travel to the Gulf Coast, they have not experienced widespread cancellations. Additionally, travelers visit these communities for reasons other than boating and swimming including visiting family and friends, state and national parks, golfing, shopping, dining and nightlife. Therefore, AAA is projecting an increase in travel in states in the Gulf Coast region as well.

AAA's projections are based on economic forecasting and research by IHS Global Insight. The Boston-based economic research and consulting firm teamed with AAA in 2009 to jointly analyze travel trends during the major holidays. AAA has been reporting on holiday travel trends for more than two decades. The complete AAA / IHS Global Insight 2010 Fourth of July holiday forecast can be found at AAA.com/news.

Air and car trips to increase

Trips by automobile are expected to increase in popularity with 90 percent of travelers, or 31.4 million people, reaching their destination by driving. This is an increase of 17.7 percent from last Fourth of July when 26.7 million travelers went by motor vehicle. AAA expects the national average price of self-serve regular gasoline to be between $2.70-$2.80 per gallon during this Fourth of July holiday weekend. Leisure air travel also is expected to grow slightly with 1.56 million holiday flyers expected. This would be an increase of 8.2 percent from one year ago when 1.44 million flew. Trips by other modes, including rail, bus and watercraft, will be the dominant means of travel used by six percent of all travelers.

AAA also cautions that the Fourth of July marks the busiest travel holiday for emergency roadside services calls. As temperatures rise, vehicles are put to the test. Without preventive maintenance the summer heat increases the likelihood of a motorist experiencing a vehicle failure, leaving them unexpectedly - and dangerously - stranded on the side of the road. AAA expects it will come to the aid of 520,000 stranded motorists during the holiday weekend. Batteries can be especially affected by heat and AAA anticipates it will replace 30,000 auto batteries on the roadside and jump start an additional 60,000 during the holiday weekend. The nation's largest motor club also will aid 85,000 motorists locked out of their vehicles and change 75,000 flat tires.

To decrease the likelihood of break down, AAA recommends motorists have their vehicle serviced regularly based on the manufacturer's recommended schedule and identify a quality repair shop. AAA offers a free public service to help consumers find quality auto repair facilities that meet and maintain high professional standards for training, equipment, cleanliness and customer service. Motorists can either look for the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign at local auto repair facilities, or search for a nearby AAA Approved shop online at AAA.com/repair.

AAA also helps motorists prepare for the heavy toll summer heat can have on a vehicle batteries with its Mobile Battery Service. In many areas, AAA Mobile Battery technicians will travel to members to test their vehicle's battery and ascertain if it's near the end of its life, in need of replacement and susceptible to failure in the summer heat.

Median spending down; average distance traveled will be 617 miles

The average distance traveled by Americans this Fourth of July holiday weekend (617 miles) is forecast to be approximately the same as one year ago (614 miles). Median spending is estimated to be $644 this Fourth of July, nearly $50 less than last year when median spending was estimated at $693. Fifty-eight percent of Americans will spend time with friends and relatives over the holiday.

Airfares, hotel and rental car rates increase over holiday compared to last year

According to AAA's Leisure Travel Index, airfares over the Fourth of July holiday weekend are expected to increase 13 percent from last year as air passengers will pay a lowest average round-trip fare of $192 per ticket. However, it is important to note that fares for the prior year dropped 16 percent and, in spite of the increase in 2010, fares are still below the average from two years ago. Weekend daily car rental rates will increase four percent to an average of $54. Hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are also expected to increase four percent from a year ago with travelers spending an average of $143 per night compared to $137 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels will pay only one percent more at an average cost of $102 per night.

AAA offers a variety of travel planning tools including free TourBook travel guides and maps for members and the TripTik® Travel Planner, available free to all travelers at AAA.com. Three iPhone apps offer access to AAA products and services on the go. The AAA TripTik Mobile app provides gas prices and information on hotels, restaurants and attractions. The AAA Discounts app, which has been downloaded more than 800,000 times, uses GPS technology to acquire a user's location and displays nearby AAA Show Your Card &Save® locations. With AAA Roadside, AAA members requiring emergency service can quickly send their location, vehicle description and specific breakdown details directly to AAA. The free apps are available for download at the iTunes Store.

Air Transport Association Expects 2.5 Percent Decline in Air Travelers Over 21-Day Winter Holiday Period

/PRNewswire/ -- The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, announced today that it expects 41 million passengers(1) to travel over the upcoming winter holidays(2) on U.S. carriers, representing a 2.5 percent year-over-year decline from the 42 million passengers(1) estimated to have flown during the same period in 2008.(3)

The three busiest travel days during this holiday period are expected to be Sunday, Dec. 27, Monday, Dec. 28 and Tuesday, Dec. 29, respectively, based on sample data from the 2008 winter holiday period.

"We are continuing to see fewer air travelers over the holidays, a trend that has been apparent throughout 2009," said ATA President and CEO James C. May. "Capacity reductions will likely mean fuller flights on many days." May added that the decline continues to be driven by a fragile economy and depressed global demand for travel.

ATA is expecting the federal government, once again, to open up Special Activity Airspace (SAS) on an as-needed basis to help ease congestion. SAS was also made available over the Thanksgiving holiday.

May encouraged passengers to pack light, to check their flight status before leaving for the airport, and to remember to arrive early to allow plenty of time for check-in and security screening.

In addition, ATA encourages passengers to consult its resource page for recommended travel tips. In particular, passengers are encouraged to keep in mind the following:

-- It is strongly recommended that all passengers review the Web site of
the airline on which they are flying for respective policies,
amenities, customer service plans and flight-operation alert
notifications.
-- Pack any gifts unwrapped, as they may need to be inspected by
security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is also
providing additional Helpful Hints for Holiday Travelers online.
-- Remember that TSA requires that air travelers follow its 3-1-1 Rule
for liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on bags when passing through
security checkpoints.
-- Passengers should be aware that they could be asked to provide their
date of birth and gender when making a reservation, as part of the TSA
Secure Flight program. Travelers should expect no change in the travel
experience, however, as part of this security initiative.

ATA airline members and their affiliates transport more than 90 percent of all U.S. airline passenger and cargo traffic. For additional information about the industry, visit www.airlines.org.

(1) The total number of revenue passengers boarding aircraft in scheduled service.

(2) Defined as the 21 days spanning Thurs., Dec. 17, 2009 through Wed., Jan. 6, 2010.

(3) There is no source of industrywide traffic statistics for less than one month, so historical data for holiday travel periods must be estimated.

Reminder to Motorists: As You Travel This Holiday Season, Pay Special Attention to Law Enforcement Officers Patrolling Our Roadways

/PRNewswire/ -- On the day before Thanksgiving 2008, Deputy Nick Pham of the Monroe County (FL) Sheriff's Office was on patrol on U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys when his police cruiser collided with a semi-tractor trailer. A four-year veteran of Florida law enforcement in Florida, the 43-year-old husband and father died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Deputy Sheriff Pham was one of six law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty on the nation's roadways last holiday season -- the period between the Thanksgiving holiday and New Year's. That can be a particularly dangerous time for law enforcement, as millions of Americans take to the roads and officers step up their safety patrols. In all of 2008, 71 law enforcement officers nationally died in traffic-related incidents -- the leading cause of officer fatalities for the 11th consecutive year.

To help prevent officer deaths and injuries this holiday season, the "Drive Safely" campaign of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) is again reminding motorists to pay special attention to officers on the roads and to follow other common-sense traffic safety measures.

"Again this year, our dedicated law enforcement officers will be called on to give up time with their own families so the rest of us can travel in safety to spend the holidays with our loved ones. Every time we get behind the wheel -- and especially during the holidays -- we owe these brave men and women our full attention and consideration," said NLEOMF Chairman and CEO Craig W. Floyd.

"In addition to doing the obvious things -- not speeding or driving drunk -- drivers need to be especially mindful of officers who will be out enforcing traffic laws. If you see a police cruiser stopped by the side of the road, please slow down, move over and allow the officers to do their jobs safely and effectively," Mr. Floyd added.

The Memorial Fund's "Drive Safely" campaign promotes a number of actions motorists can take to protect law enforcement officers, other drivers and themselves:

-- Focus on driving. Avoid talking on your cell phone, eating, or hunting
for items in your vehicle while driving. When traveling 55 mph or
faster, a two-second distraction can be deadly. Adjust your speed for
road conditions, especially snow and ice.
-- Slow down and "move over." If you see an emergency vehicle stopped by
the side of the road, slow down and safely move over one lane if
possible. Forty-seven states now have "move over" laws, and violators
can be ticketed and fined.
-- Get out of the way of emergency vehicles. If an emergency vehicle has
its lights or siren activated, slow down, move to the right and stop
if possible. Once the vehicle passes, do not follow it too closely.
-- Stay off the shoulder. Driving on the shoulder of a roadway is not
only illegal -- it's dangerous. Emergency vehicles use the shoulder to
get to emergencies faster, where a few seconds can mean the difference
between life and death.
-- Watch officers' hands as they direct traffic. And listen for whistles
or other audible signals from officers on how to proceed.

For more information, safety tips and resources, visit the "Drive Safely" website at www.LawMemorial.org/DriveSafely.

Great deals, seasonal activities make pre-holiday a great time to get away

(ARA) – A vacation may be the last thing on your mind as the holidays draw near this year, but contrary to popular belief the holiday season is a great time to take a break. Pre-holiday season deals sweeten the appeal of a weekend getaway to decompress from the stresses of a busy fall and winter season.

“While airfares and hotel rates do rise on and immediately surrounding major holidays, the weeks leading up to those times can yield amazing deals and wonderful opportunities to escape the hectic pace of the holiday season,” says Brad Dean, president and chief executive officer for the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Still not convinced now is the time for a quick getaway? Consider these facts:

Getting There

Airports will be crowded and frustrating as soon as the holidays arrive. Yet airfares are lower and airports are less crowded in the weeks leading up to peak holiday season. You’re much more likely to score a good deal on airfare – and a less stressful airport experience – if you travel pre-holiday.

Driving trips are also easier before the holiday. Come Thanksgiving or Christmas, everyone will be visiting family and friends to celebrate. Highways are less likely to be clogged with traffic in advance of the holidays. To make the most of your weekend getaway, choose a driving destination that’s easily accessible and offers the most “bang for your buck.” Myrtle Beach, S.C., for example is a popular driving destination from many parts of the eastern seaboard and Midwest.

Hotel Deals

Hotel prices typically increase a day or two before a holiday – rates may even double over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. However, hotels are relatively empty and inspired to offer better deals in the weeks leading up to the holidays. In fact, rates can be reduced to more than half the cost of a room during peek summer season. You can find great package deals if you travel before the holidays, especially to affordable locations that are in their “off” seasons. Many beach resorts and hotels offer all-inclusive packages with admission to local attractions and many feature heated indoor swimming pools and even indoor waterparks.

Cool Prices on Hot Attractions

Attraction tickets that might seem pricey during high season will likely be more appealingly priced during the pre-holiday, “off season.” Some outdoor attractions in more temperate climes, such as Myrtle Beach will stay open through the holidays, as will shows, indoor attractions and sites. Plus, you won’t have to fight the “peak season” crowds or lines at year-round attractions like popular museums and aquariums.

A Taste of the Holidays without the Expense

What commercial venture in the United States doesn’t stretch the holidays? With Halloween items appearing on store shelves in early September, is it any surprise that resort attractions will don their holiday décor and feature holiday-themed events and shows long before the actual dates arrive?

It’s possible to get into the holiday spirit and enjoy themed shows, attractions and activities when you travel before the holidays. For example, the Myrtle Beach area offers everything from live holiday shows to candlelit gardens with carolers, Christmas tree festivals to holiday markets.

Hotwire Reveals Top Winter Wonderland Getaway Deals

/PRNewswire/ -- Hotwire.com(R), a leading discount travel site, today announced a blizzard of fantastic last minute holiday deals to popular cold weather destinations that are bound to make price-savvy travelers hearts sing with glee for the holidays. From rarely before seen hotel deals in cities like New York and Chicago to popular ski destinations in Colorado that won't freeze your wallet, Hotwire(R) has seen an uptick in room availability at cold weather destinations due to the economic slowdown.

During the winter months, the travel industry experiences a seasonal downturn in travel bookings. Hotwire helps major hotel suppliers fill empty rooms that would otherwise go unsold, which combined with the economic slowdown means deeply discounted room rates in some of the country's most popular destinations. For consumers looking for a quick, exciting and affordable winter get away, Hotwire offers an abundance of hotel options.

There's no better place to take in holiday lights and festivities than New York City. For those that think visiting New York over the holidays means breaking the bank, Hotwire is pleased to show them otherwise. Hotwire has seen a boom in room availability in New York City this holiday season. With unheard of discounts, like a 4-star hotel in Midtown for only $132 a night, consumers can now travel to New York on a dime and use their hard earned cash to experience all of the holiday treats the city has to offer.

Hotwire also has incredible hotel deals in Chicago. Enjoy world-class shopping on the Magnificent Mile and indulge in exquisite dining in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood while staying at a 4.5-star hotel for only $109 a night or a 4-star for $89 per night when booking through Hotwire.

For travelers who want more 'adventure' during their holidays, Hotwire has rarely seen discounts of up to 54 percent off retail prices in snowy locales. Now dare devil travelers can board or ski their hearts out with Hotwire's help.

Here's a selection of ski resort deals recently booked on Hotwire, researched on December 2, 2008*:

-- Colorado: A 4-star in Vail from $109; in Aspen, Hotwire has a 4-star
from $66 and a 4.5-star hotel from $199 (40 percent savings!)
-- Vermont: 3-star hotel in Burlington from $59

US Airways Kicks off 3rd Annual Holiday Travel Storytelling Contest

(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the third consecutive year, US Airways (NYSE: LCC) invites travelers to share their favorite holiday travel memories with the rest of the world. The winning submission will take home a $500 US Airways Gift Card to be used anywhere US Airways flies, and two runners-up will take home a $250 and $100 US Airways Gift Card. Last year, entries ranged from humorous (folks trapped in their cars by their Christmas trees tied to their roof) to poignant (family members getting together for what they knew would be their last holiday) to one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments (the late Luciano Pavarotti performing impromptu outside New York's LaGuardia Airport.) Last year’s winner heralded from Cheltenham, Pa., and provided a heartwarming account of Christmas spirit where one pilot’s announcement made a memorable Christmas Eve for all of the children (and grownups too) on his plane.

“Not to take anything away from all of the very serious economic news all around us, this is simply an opportunity for travelers to share their positive stories about holiday travel with the rest of the world,” said Elise Eberwein, senior vice president, people and communications for US Airways. “Whether reflecting on new adventures in exotic locations or returning home and reconnecting with friends from other lifetimes, airline travel is the one constant that makes all of those things events possible.”

To enter the contest, participants can submit their digital story consisting of a photo (3 MB limit) and brief narrative by Jan. 2, 2009 to holidaycontest@usairways.com. Photos and story submissions will be judged by a panel of US Airways employees and will be based on the following criteria: 36 percent originality, 78 percent creativity and 100 percent overall holiday spirit. The most compelling holiday travel story will be announced on Jan. 5, 2009 and awarded a $500 US Airways Gift Card, valid for travel to nearly 200 US Airways destinations. Second and third place winners will also be announced on Jan. 5, 2009 and receive a $250 and $100 US Airways Gift Card respectively. More information about the contest, including rules and restrictions, is available at www.usairways.com (click on ‘Share your story & win’).

39% of Consumers Traveling for Thanksgiving

PRNewswire/ -- With the economy in distress it wouldn't be surprising if people chose to stay home for the holidays this year. Yet, a recent Harris Interactive survey commissioned by Hotwire.com(R), a leading travel discount site, found that Thanksgiving is a holiday that people won't skip.

According to the survey, 39 percent of consumers will be traveling this Thanksgiving, which while seemingly low, is the same as those who opted to travel last year. And, similar to last year, of those consumers who will be traveling this holiday, 74 percent will travel shorter distances of 200 miles or less for the holiday.

"In an economic downturn, one might expect consumers to be more hesitant to travel even during the holidays," said Clem Bason, vice-president and travel expert at Hotwire. "However, our data shows that despite the tightening of purses, travel is inevitable this time of year and consumers should know that there are still great deals to be had on sites like Hotwire(R) if they are interested in hotel rooms, car rentals or even airfare."

As business travelers vacate for the Thanksgiving holiday, the number of empty hotel rooms increases. Hotwire has special relationships with major hotel suppliers to help them fill these hotel rooms that would otherwise go unsold, which means deep discounts for holiday travelers looking to take advantage of these great rates and stay in a hotel as opposed to a packed holiday house.

"This is a time when people look out for, not only their own bank accounts, but those of family and friends," said Clem Bason. "Thirty-five percent of the survey respondents are willing to spend up to $100 on a hotel room to help family or friends or avoid staying in a packed house. By booking unsold rooms on Hotwire, they will have a lot of great deals to choose from."

For example on Hotwire, a four-star hotel room in Downtown Los Angeles over Thanksgiving will run just $89 a night.* But, that's not only over the Thanksgiving holiday. Throughout the year, Hotwire delivers deals you can't find on other travel sites by helping hotels fill rooms that would otherwise sit empty.

Clem Bason has the following suggestions to help consumers save money this Thanksgiving and winter holiday season:

-- Go opaque: Sites that offer unsold inventory, like Hotwire, provide deep discounts to consumers because they help top travel providers fill empty airline seats, hotel rooms and extra car rentals.

-- Sign-up for travel alerts: Flight prices can vary from day-to-day. By signing up for travel alert services such as TripWatcher (http://www.hotwire.com/trip-watcher/index.jsp), consumers can make sure that they get the biggest bang for their buck.

-- Rent a car: With gas prices going down and extremely cheap car rental prices, consumers have a chance to save big and avoid putting wear and tear on their own cars by renting a car. By booking through Hotwire, consumers can rent a car from just $13.95 a day.

*Based on a Hotwire search conducted on November 13, 2008.

Dressed For The Holidays

(NAPSI)-When it's the holiday season in the Valley Forge area and Montgomery County, Pa., the historic sites, villages, inns, malls and more are dressed in their holiday best.

Pottsgrove Manor, once the Pottstown summer home of ironmaster John Potts, showcases the elegance of a traditional 18th century English Christmas from Nov. 24 through Jan. 11. On Dec. 14, the manor hosts its Colonial Candlelight Open House with Colonial music, costumed historians, period fare prepared by Susan Plaisted, and entertainment by the Tapestry Dance Ensemble.

The home of former Pennsylvania Governor Samuel Pennypacker, Pennypacker Mills in Schwenksville, will be wrapped in grand Victorian holiday style from Nov. 28 through Jan. 4. During the site's Victorian Christmas Open House on Dec. 13 costumed historians, as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus, greet guests who also witness toy candy making.

Ft. Washington's Hope Lodge has rooms furnished in the Colonial style (1743-1770) and in the Colonial Revival style (1922-1953). From Dec. 5 through 7, the mansion is trimmed with trees, lights and more.

Thirty-five themed Christmas trees, including one suspended from the ceiling; a multitude of Santa Clauses of many eras; and an extensive Christmas village decorate the seven-room Shearer Elegance Bed & Breakfast in Linfield.

All the area's malls, including King of Prussia (the nation's largest retail mall) are bedecked with ornaments, garlands and Santas assuring hopeful kids.

An outdoor Christmas tree lighting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 celebrates the season in Skippack Village, along Route 73, in Skippack. Santa arrives to the joy of little children and choirs perform.

At John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove in Audubon, the outdoors is brought in. On Dec. 7, the museum's halls will be festooned with natural decorations. Music, seasonal treats, a scavenger hunt and a John James Audubon impersonator will be featured.

Natural materials are also the focus at Morris Arboretum's special Holiday Garden Railway Display, which opens on Nov. 28. Bark, twigs, hollow logs, moss, acorns, dried flowers, seeds and stones form a miniature landscape with buildings, loops, tunnels and even rivers. The quarter-mile track, with 15 different rail lines, two cable cars, nine bridges and bustling G-scale model trains is set in the lovely winter garden of the arboretum. Children and adults can even make ornaments to take home.

For more information about celebrating the holiday season in the Valley Forge area and Montgomery County for a day, an overnight or a great weekend getaway, visit www.valleyforge.org.
